Pen Test on our Stickers!
We occasionally get this question:
"What pens work best with your stickers?"
We've had a response in our FAQ page that we share with some recommendations and links, but some of the recommendations were based on what I've seen others recommend and not based on my personal experience, since I haven't used all the pens. I personally love Sharpie Ultra Fine Point and I've never had a problem with smearing. Plus, I love all the colors!
But I wanted to test what I have been recommending so that I can share my experience with you.
The pens included in this test:
- Sharpie Ultra-fine markers
- Staedtler Lumocolor Permanent
- Pilot Extra Fine Point Permanent Markers
- Sakura Microperms
- Papermate Inkjoy Gel
- Ballpoint (random free sample pen haha)
For each pen, I wanted to have a baseline, extreme example...where I would "write + swipe" immediately. Like, if someone were wild and wrote a word and immediately swiped their finger across. This would show that yes, these pens do smear a little in extreme cases. The Sharpie, Staedtler & Ballpoint had the quickest dry time with the least smear on that first swipe.
Then, for each pen, I continued writing a list, closed the pen and then swiped across and down the entire list.
The Sharpie, Staedtler, Pilot and Sakura pens were great with zero smear. These are my highest recommendations! Green check marks!
The Ballpoint has a question mark because after I finished the list and swiped, there was actually still some smear. I then waited about 15 seconds and swiped again and there was no smear. So the first swipe wasn't that bad, but then it needed a little extra time compared to the marker pens. There are also various ballpoint types, so proceed at your own risk here.
Lastly, the Papermate Inkjoy performed the worst. This is a gel pen, so I wanted to show what those were like. Even after 15 minutes, it smeared when I wiped, so I do not recommend these.
I really hope this is helpful! I shared Amazon links to each pen above so you can go directly to them. Happy planning! :)
